Lansbury - "I'm sorry that they have to use the title Murder, She Wrote, even though they have access to it and it's their right"

Murder She Wrote star Angela Lansbury has said it would be "a mistake" for the planned remake of the series to use the same title.

US TV network NBC is planning a new version of the show with Oscar-winning The Help star Octavia Spencer playing a hospital administrator who self-publishes her first mystery novel and becomes an amateur sleuth.

The network has approached Lansbury about being part of the new show, but in an interview with The Associated Press she said: "I think it's a mistake to call it Murder, She Wrote, because Murder, She Wrote will always be about a Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person."

"So I'm sorry that they have to use the title Murder, She Wrote, even though they have access to it and it's their right," Lansbury added.

However, Deadline.com, which first broke the news of the remake, said that the makers of the show have not finalised the title of the new series, and that Spencer's character will not be called Jessica Fletcher.

Paying tribute to Spencer, Lansbury told The Associated Press: "I saw her in The Help and thought she was absolutely wonderful, a lovely actress. So I wish her well, but I wish it wasn't in Murder, She Wrote."
