Johnny Carson handed off the show to Jay Leno in 1992. Leno held down the comedic late-night talk show until 2009, when he briefly moved to a later time slot making room for Conan O'Brien to take his post. But less than one year later, Leno was back. He is passing the reigns onto Fallon, who will officially take over Feb. 24.

Fallon will record the "Tonight Show" live in New York City for first time in 42 years, since Carson moved it out west.

Meyers, a 39-year-old "Saturday Night Live" alum, will begin hosting "Late Night" on the same night Fallon's promotion begins, making him the fourth to host the 12:30 a.m. show. The show's first host was David Letterman in 1982 followed by Conan O'Brien and Fallon, who's been hosting since 2009.
