GAME OF THRONES episode 24 (season 3, episode 4): Emilia Clarke

Emilia Clarke in HBO's "Game of Thrones," a pirate favorite

HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has taken the crown for the most illegally downloaded show of 2013, according to the piracy news site TorrentFreak.

The series’ season-three finale was illegally downloaded 5.9 million times, most within a week after it aired in June.

This is the second year in a row that the swords-and-sorcery drama has taken the dubious honor.

AMC’s “Breaking Bad” came in a distant second; its finale has drawn a still-whopping 4.2 million illegal downloads.

Hollywood has been fighting a losing battle against piracy for years, since the rise of the Internet and the spread of file-sharing sites on which people can illegally trade copyrighted films, TV series and music.

And while most entertainment executives condemn the practice, some have begun to look for a silver lining.

Last summer, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes noted that widespread piracy of “Game of Thrones” was “better than an Emmy” in terms of promotional value.

Similarly “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan said in a BBC interview that piracy helped boost the show’s “brand awareness.”

Here is TorrentFreak's list of the shows with the most-pirated episodes:

1.Game of Thrones” (5.9 million)

2. Breaking Bad” (4.2 million)

3. “The Walking Dead” (3.6 million)

4. “The Big Bang Theory (3.4 million)

5. “Dexter” (3.1 million)

6. “How I Met Your Mother” (3 million)

7. “Suits” (2.6 million)

8. “Homeland” (2.4 million)

9. “Vikings” (2.3 million)

10. “Arrow” (2.2 million)
