CULVER CITY, California -- As “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” swings toward its May 2014 opening, Sony Pictures Entertainment is already figuring out ways to expand the Spider-Man universe. It now appears that expansion will be through Spidey’s enemies.

Sony, in association with Marvel Entertainment, has announced that five writers will be working on “Venom” and “The Sinister Six.” The announcement came via the website ElectroArrives.com[1] late Thursday.

Veteran screenwriters Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon and Drew Goddard will collaborate with producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach plus “The Amazing Spider-Man” director Marc Webb to grow the franchise through the new villain-themed films.

“The Spider-Man film franchise is one of our studio’s greatest assets. We are thrilled with the creative team we have assembled to delve more deeply into the world that Marc, Avi and Matt have begun to explore in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ We believe that Marc, Alex, and Drew have uniquely exciting visions for how to expand the Spider-Man universe in each of these upcoming films,” Columbia Pictures president Doug Belgrad said in a press relase.

The deal also includes a third installment of the current franchise, tentatively titled “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.”
