Alyssa Milano accepted Jay Mohr's apology after he fat-shamed her last week, but admits the weight jabs hurt her deeply, she told Extra[1] Jan. 7.
"I just think he was trying to make a joke and not think about it, but I heard it on Christmas Day and it hurt me," said Milano. "I was affected by it and I wanted to remind him that I'm a human being and this hurts.”
The controversy erupted after Mohr said in a radio interview that Milano looked chubby[2] , especially in the stomach area, and that she had clearly let herself go after having a baby in 2011.
"She's very tiny, in height," said Mohr. "It seems like she had a baby and said, ‘I don't really give a s--t.' I read it on her gut. Somebody sat in the director's chair and was not wearing Spanx and I was like, ‘Jesus Christ.'"
In response, Alyssa tweeted[3] , "So sorry you felt the need to publicly fat-shame me. Be well and God bless."
After being barraged with criticism from all sides for fat-shaming a woman about her post-baby body, Mohr apologized[4] to Milano via Twitter. But Milano said she remains annoyed that people feel so free to criticize a woman for not losing all her baby weight immediately.
“I think it's an interesting statement about where we are socially that people feel that they can sort of rip a woman's body apart after having a baby," said Alyssa, 41.
"We've plastered these celebrities on tabloids about how much weight they gained during their pregnancy and how quickly they lose it afterwards. So it's sort of everyone's fair game, and I don’t think that's fair.”
The 5-foot-2 Milano said she has lost 45 of the 55 pounds she gained[5] while pregnant by following a mostly vegetarian diet, walking and doing yoga. “I gained 55 pounds when I was pregnant," she said. "I still have 10 more to lose."
While she's happy to be thinner, Alyssa said she would never resort to extreme dieting or excessive exercise just to fit into a bikini.
“Our bodies are not made to look good in a string bikini!” she said. “Our bodies are made to nurture and cuddle and all of those amazing things that come along with being a mom. I still have a muffin top!"
