‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ continues to fight off competitors, crossing the $150 million mark with a second place finish on Christmas Day.
It's haul is made more impressive by both the crowded field -- "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" and "47 Ronin" also opened on Christmas Day -- and the movie's three-hour runtime, which means less showings per theater compared to its shorter competitors.
Finishing a close second was "The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug," the second installment in Peter Jackson’s prequel trilogy to “The Lord of the Rings,” adding another $8.9 million to a horde that's already passed $150 million in the U.S. alone in less than two weeks.

Ben Stiller’s ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ reportedly earned a respectable $7.5 million on its first day.
In third place with a shade over $8 million was "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," which returns Will Ferrell as the mustached, bumbling TV newscaster Ron Burgundy.
"Walter Mitty," written, directed and starring Ben Stiller, rode positive reviews to fourth place, with a projected take of $7.5 million on its opening day, according to Variety.
