Vin Diesel has opened up about his struggle to cope with the loss of long-time friend and colleague Paul Walker, who died in a car accident last weekend.

Diesel has described how he went to visit the late 40-year-old's mother and realised that he needed their strength as much as they needed his.

Writing on Facebook, he said: "When I heard, I immediately flew back to California, and went directly from the plane to his mother's house...

"I thought they needed my strength, but realized when I got there and broke down before his family, that it was I who needed theirs."

He continued: "His mother hugged me and said I am so sorry... I said sorry? You're the mother who lost a son?... She said yes, but you lost your other half... (sic)".

Production on the next Fast & Furious sequel has been shut down following the tragedy, which killed both Walker and a friend when the car they were in crashed before bursting into flames.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is among several other stars to have paid tribute to Walker over the last week, particularly recognising how unconcerned he was by the concept of fame.

"That was one of the interesting things about Paul: his reservations about being in the spotlight and being a star, whatever the definition of that may be," he told Entertainment Weekly.

"He was motivated by work that allowed him to take care of his family, number one, and that also allowed him the power and the leverage to help people in need and in crisis."
