The 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations[1] were announced on Wednesday, Dec. 11, and many movie stars—including Julia Roberts[2] , Chiwetel Ejiofor[3] and Sandra Bullock—were honored. Of course, with only five contenders per category, many actors lost their chance to be recognized. Here, E! News looks at some of the biggest snubs in the film categories.

Bruce Dern, Ejiofor, Tom Hanks, Matthew McConaughey and Forest Whitaker were all frontrunners for the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role category—and they'll each get their shot at glory when the show is simulcast live on TNT and TBS at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Leonardo DiCaprio[5] scored major buzz for his starring role in The Wolf of Wall Street—but it didn't translate to a nomination in that category. Overlooked last year for his supporting role in Django Unchained, he was once again shut out of this year's ceremony. Other potential Leading Actor nominees—including American Hustle's Christian Bale[6] , Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom's Idris Elba[7] , Fruitvale Station's Michael B. Jordan and All Is Lost's Robert Redford—also failed to be recognized.

In the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category, Barkhad Abdi, Daniel Brühl, Michael Fassbender, James Gandolfini and Jared Leto were honored. As such, American Hustle's Bradley Cooper[8] , 42's Harrison Ford[9] , Nebraska's Will Forte, Saving Mr. Banks' Hanks and The Book Thief's Geoffrey Rush were overlooked. (Fingers crossed at least one of the talented stars gets a Golden Globe nod on Thursday, Dec. 12.)

Amy Adams[11] earned raves for her performance in American Hustle, but they weren't enough to land her an Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role nomination. Instead, Cate Blanchett, Sandra Bullock, Judi Dench, Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson will go head-to-head for the honor. Other shutouts in that category include Labor Day's Kate Winslet[12] , Before Midnight's Julie Delpy and France Ha's Greta Gerwig.

The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category rightly recognizes Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong'o[13] , Julia Roberts, June Squibb and Oprah Winfrey[14] . However, other standout stars—including Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom's Naomie Harris[15] , 12 Years a Slave's Sarah Paulson[16] and Fruitvale Station's Octavia Spencer[17] —didn't live up to their pre-nomination hype.

12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, August: Osage County, Dallas Buyers Club and Lee Daniels' The Butler are nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category. Other potential nominees—including Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, Fruitvale Station, Inside Llewyn Davis, Prisoners and The Wolf of Wall Street—may have better luck at the Golden Globes or the Oscars.
