WASHINGTON — NPR says it has received $17 million in grants to help expand its multimedia news coverage and develop technology that will allow listeners to move seamlessly among multiple platforms.
The grants announced Monday come from the Knight Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wallace Foundation and the Ford Foundation, along with individual donors. The money will fund expanded coverage of education, global health and development and race and culture.
The grants will also go toward building what NPR describes as "a cohesive listening experience for news, arts and culture." The technology will be implemented in partnership with six NPR member stations. The idea is to allow listeners to transition between clock radios, car radios and mobile devices without missing any of their preferred programming.
