On the same day that influential group Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April, the small Washington state city of Hoquiam will be celebrating the group with Nirvana Day.
Singer Kurt Cobain was born and raised in Aberdeen, Wash., just four miles from Hoquiam. However, the group doesn’t have a strong connection to the city, other than the fact that Cobain did live there briefly, notes Rolling Stone[1] . Still, Mayor Jack Durney considers him and bassist Krist Novoselic proud members of the city’s history.
“They bring great honor, I think as I say, to our entire community,” Durney told KXRO[2] . “And I think that it’s good Kurt Cobain lived in Hoquiam for a little while, but he and Krist Novoselic are part of our community, and I think it’s good to honor our sons and their great accomplishments.”
Nirvana Day is scheduled for April 10, the same day the group will be celebrated during the Rock Hall induction ceremony. The group joins[3] a stacked class that includes Kiss, Hall & Oates, Peter Gabriel, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt.
“I'd like to thank the committee not only for this induction, but also for recognizing Nirvana for what we were: pure rock & roll,” drummer Dave Grohl said when the news was announced earlier this month. “Most of all, thank you to all of the fans that have supported rock & roll throughout the years, and to Kurt and Krist, without whom I would not be here today.”
Grohl, Novoselic and Paul McCartney performed as part of a mini Nirvana reunion during the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy relief benefit concert in New York last year.
