The long running Broadway smash "The Lion King" has earned top box office honors, becoming the highest grossing show of 2013. The veteran show raked in $97 million over the course of the year, bringing its total income to just over $1 billion.

The show, which features music by Elton John and Tim Rice, opened on Broadway in 1997 and has been housed at the Minskoff Theater since 2006. It is an adaptation of the beloved Disney film of the same name and features characters in extravagant costumes to represent the animal characters in the film.

The show easily beat out the second place contender "Book of Mormon," which earned $90.4 million since the start of 2013. "The Lion King" also broke a sales record for the Minskoff Theater in the second to last week of 2013, selling over $2.8 million in tickets.
