Hollywood star Julia Roberts has revealed she “felt terrible” for knocking into her co-star Meryl Streep in upcoming film August: Osage County.

The 46-year-old actress, who plays Streep's on-screen daughter Barbara in the movie, spent hours pushing the 63-year-old star during the film's production - leaving the two "bruised and battered".

''It was horrible, I felt terrible every time,” the Pretty Woman heroine explained, reports Bang Showbiz. “I was so worried about hurting her and she was such an incredible trouper. We did the scene for like an entire day.

''We're both bruised up and battered and I was like, 'Look at this! Oh my God, I'm just beating up Meryl Streep!' But she never said a word and she is secretly icing her swelling wrist, like nothing happened. She's asking me, 'What's happening to you?' She's more concerned about others and she has a lot more endurance than I do. I love her.''

The gritty drama, based on Tracy Lett's Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name, sees a group of relatives returning to Oklahoma for a funeral.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin, Margo Martindale, Dermot Mulroney, Chris Cooper, Juliette Lewis and Sam Shepard also star.

Meanwhile, the film has been screened as part of the Toronto International Film Festival, but bosses are reportedly planning on re-cutting the ending so it is more in line with the original stage show.

August: Osage County is out on limited release on December 26 in the UK.
