"The Voice" top 12[1] came with their vocal guns ablaze on Monday night. Three remaining members of Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green[2] 's teams sang for their lives as they each inched closer to the crown.
The night delivered some powerful performances, touching moments and big surprises. Here were some of our favorite singers:
Caroline Pennell
Team Cee Lo's darling 17-year-old Caroline Pennell opened the show with a change of tune. The young artist took an up-tempo approach with an energetic rendition of Avicii's "Wake Me Up" against a projection of animated clouds, stars and butterflies. Even when the studio audience went off rhythm with their clapping, Pennell stayed on track winning the coaches' vote. "There's a purity to what you do," Levine said. "Great job."
James Wolpert
When tech-nerd-turned-rocker James Wolpert took on The Killers' "Mr. Brightside," you couldn't help but cringe because of the difficulty of the song. Thankfully, the shy artist made coach Adam Levine very proud when he burst out of his shell, commanding the song and stage with a "dynamic" performance that ended with Wolpert on his knees. "What's there to complain about?" Green said, while Levine noted that Wolpert "turned into a rockstar in front of our very eyes."
Jacquie Lee
The youngest artist in the competition repped Team Christina with her A-game. 16-year-old Jacquie Lee showed off her dark, mature side again with a strong performance of "Love is Blindness." Unlike the other artists, Lee sang alone without a grand set or band to accompany her and as Xtina pointed out, Lee "set this stage on fire." Levine referred to her as a "dragon" and Green was so enthralled he admitted, "I forget to clap."
Matthew Schuler
He's got a smile that lights up a room and voice that melts your heart. Team Christina's Matthew Schuler returned to his gospel roots last night by singing the iconic "Hallelujah." The soft, emotional performance left his coach praising the Lord with her hands and Schuler's parents in tears. Xtina called his gift "rare" and Shelton said he is the Team Christina frontrunner. But the ultimate praise came from an audience member who shouted a simple but powerful, "Amen."
Cole Vosbury
The night's biggest surprise had to be Team Blake's Cole Vosbury. The bearded wonder (whose mane has its own Twitter[3] ) dropped jaws when he sang an emotional and gritty version of Miguel's "Adorn," a song very unexpected for the indie soul singer. Former coach Green was "very excited" for Vosbury, who definitely shifted the momentum in his direction. "He brings a gun to a knife fight," Shelton said, further praising one of his most popular artists.
"The Voice" continues tonight as the top 10 are revealed by America's vote.
