Frozen is already shaping up to be the box office big hitter over Thanksgiving weekend, raking in an impressive $15.2 million on it's opening day. But will the film turn it's commercial success into Oscar glory?

Frozen is the latest offering from Disney and is loosely based on the classic Snow Queen fairytale, following the adventure of Anna a fearless young princess voiced by Kristen Bell.

The animated adventure opened in 4,173 theatres stateside on Wednesday and it didn't take long for audiences to fall under it's spell, with the stellar opening putting it on course to surpass the $80 million it was predicted, the Hollywood Reporter claims.

The movie still has stiff competition from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire though, with the Jennifer Lawrence sequel adding to it's huge global haul with another $20 million on Wednesday, meaning Frozen has quite a bit of work to do if it's going to beat it to the top this weekend.

Frozen could win the Oscars race though, with pundits and critics predicting it's a big contender for the Best Animated Feature gong at the 2014 Academy Awards.

Reviews of Frozen have pointed to the weak animated output this year with the movie's only real competition for the Oscar being Hayao Miyazaki's final movie The Wind Rises.

While the likes of Monster's Universal, Despicable Me 2 and The Croods have all performed well at the box office they're not thought to be serious contenders for a nominations.

Meanwhile The Wind Rises, which tells the story of the engineer who designed Japan's World War II fighter planes, could snatch the big one, with the jury possibly swayed by the fact that it's celebrated film-maker Miyazaki's final feature.

Miyazaki won the Oscar in 2001 for his international hit Spirited Away, for which he'd come out of retirement to direct.

We'll have to wait and see if he can beat Frozen when the Oscars are handed out next March.
