Burberry Rhythm face Suki Waterhouse was “getting back into the swing of things” following a Christmas spent in Paris, while her co-star George Barnett was Milan bound to walk for Gucci and Prada. Following a new year spent in the Maldives, warbler Paloma Faith was gearing up for the launch of her new album, "The Perfect Contradiction." So was her newly blond hair part of a new season look? “No! I got a suntan so I didn't want to look like a carrot,” she said. "It's going back to orange ASAP!” </div>

Jersey City Fashion Week aiming to be hot ticket before the big game - The Jersey Journal - NJ.com

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>An unlikely pairing will happen in Jersey City and Hoboken this month when the lofty realm of fashion and the rough-and-tumble world of football collide for a Super Bowl-themed fashion week. The Jersey City Fashion Week, which begins on Jan. 23, will combine sports and style for several events over three days that will showcase sportswear and other fashions. The Super Bowl is Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, and the teams are expected to stay in Jersey City hotels. Attendees will kick off the festivities on Thursday at 6 p.m. by getting a "sneak peek" of the participating designers at a free opening night event at Boys and Girls Club of Hudson County in Hoboken. Miss New Jersey USA 2014 Emily Shah and Miss New Jersey Teen USA 2014 Valentina Sanchez will be in attendance. The next day's Emerging Designer Fashion Event show at 6 p.m. at Pole Position Raceway in Jersey City will include designs by "top designers" from New Jersey, New York, Los Angeles and South Carolina, including GIII Sports by Carl Banks and Kay Unger NY. Former NFL players Odessa Turner and Darrell Reid are expected to walk the runway and exhibit their own clothing lines. Ticket prices vary for each event. There are two events scheduled for Saturday -- a 3 p.m. shopping event at AaRaa Accessories Shop in Hoboken and a "Cognac Tasting Soiree" at 7 p.m. at VB3 Restaurant and Bar in Jersey City. At the $85-a-ticket VB3 event, attendees can schmooze with celebrities, athletes and other VIPs while Paul Jones of JTE Spirits presents a selection of fine cognacs alongside dinner. Proceeds will benefit DLJ Give to Live Community Foundation, Jersey City Recreation Foundation, NY/NJ Snowflake Youth Foundation, Gridiron Gang, Secaucus Emergency Fund and the BK Foundation. Desha Jackson, the event's founder and program manager for Give to Live, said that although Jersey City Fashion Week was held only once annually for its first two years, the opportunity to hold an special version of the event prior to the Super Bowl was one that she just couldn't pass up to garner attention on a larger scale. "I wanted to capitalize on highlighting the designers, the community, the charities and what we do," she said. "This is the perfect opportunity to do that nationally." Jackson commented that she expects both fashion aficionados and sports fans to gravitate to the event, not just for its athletic theme, but because many staying in the area will be searching out interesting things to do in the days preceding the big game on Feb. 2. "Due to the marketing and because people are looking for things to do that are reasonable in the area, I believe that should translate into more ticket sales and higher attendance," she said. Jackson said designers "up and down the East Coast" have been contacting her about participating, which combined with a social media campaign and a couple appearances on ESPN Radio, will make Jersey City Fashion Week a hot ticket. While women are often seen in so-called "menswear"— trousers, tailored suits, neckties — men in so-called "womenswear" are very rare. And who to say what is only for women, anyway? Writing for The New York Times, noted fashion critic Suzy Menkes <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/08/fashion/In-London-Fashion-Crosses-the-Gender-Boundaries.html" target="_blank">declared</a> that the J.W. Anderson AW14 Anderson's collection wasn't the only one: Designs by Astrid Anderson and Lee Roach also pushed the boundaries of what we consider to be "menswear." Boundaries that are, of course, completely social constructs. Go back far enough in human history (prehistoric times?) and you'll find that one-shouldered dresses were a unisex phenomenon. High heels were first worn by men — persian warriors, cowboys, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Louis_XIV_of_France.jpg" target="_blank">Louis XIV</a>. Drapey desses were worn by men and boys in several different eras, from togas to tunics. And in some cultures and religions, robes and gowns are still acceptable menswear… think of caftans, djellabas, the Pope. A look for a woman. Is a shoulder gendered? Can't a bare shoulder be masculine? <img alt="London Fashion Week: The Future of Menswear Is Feminine" class="transform-ku-xlarge" data-asset-url="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/19bu9az65ralfjpg/ku-xlarge.jpg" data-chomp-id="19bu9az65ralfjpg" height="360" src="http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/19bu9az65ralfjpg/ku-xlarge.jpg" width="640"/> S Lee Roach AW14 An open-backed top is also traditionally associated with womenswear. Designer Lee Roach showed shirts that were draped around the neck like scarves. As Menkes writes, "The models with slicked-back hair wore tailoring or casual wear pared down to the bare essentials — with no collars, cuffs or, indeed, frills." And yet! Would many men you know feel comfortable wearing this? If you saw a man wearing this, would you automatically assume something about his sexuality? The collections shown in London also brought kilt-ish skirts and lots of color. While a kilt may be associated with men, skirts are still usually lady-territory, and color? Think of the red carpet: The men are almost always in black, grey, brown or dark blue, leaving the cobalts, reds, yellows and pinks to the ladies. Women are allowed and encouraged to be decorative, adorned, flamboyant. Men are expected to stay "safe" and staid. The guys who do branch out — Justin Bieber in a red suit; Kanye in a leather skirt — are the exception, not the rule. According to the city’s website, an organization is seeking a special event permit to host a <a href="http://www.vogue.com/promotions/" target="_blank">Vogue Fashion Week</a> event in mid-September at the quad, the open space in front of the Civic Center. The event, which could be held the weekend of Sept. 12-14, is scheduled to include a fashion show, vendors, DJ and music. Alcohol will be served. Dawn Adamiak, the city’s senior recreation coordinator, is listed as the staff person assigned to the event. Adamiak is the staffer who is working on staging this spring’s Rod Run and she traditionally has been the point person for large civic events such as the Santa’s Electric Light and Fourth of July parades. No formal road closures have been proposed yet, according to the city. </div>

Pittsburgh Fashion Week unveils Pop-Up CORE project - Pittsburgh Post Gazette (blog)

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>MNfashion announced that it will be restructuring in 2014 in order to better serve the budding fashion community in Minnesota. The organization, which is run completely by volunteers, feels that it is no longer able to provide the level of quality needed to support designers and retailers while still functioning as a non-profit. MNfashion’s marketing director Katie Schutrop release this statement in a <a href="http://mnfashion.org/2014/01/mnfashion-moving-forward-and-minneapolis-st-paul-fashion-week-updates/">press release</a> on Jan. 2: “Due to our quick growth as a nonprofit organization run by all volunteers, MNfashion has come to a point where we have outgrown our current business practice. It is now important that we take a closer look at day-to-day operations so as to continue to serve retailers, emerging designers and established designers in the best way possible." In an <a href="http://mnfashion.org/2014/01/a-letter-from-the-executive-director/">open letter</a>, executive director Tara Murphy stated that the decision is not a financial one, seeing as MNfashion has not lost any money on an event since May 2012. However, she would like to be able to compensate the people who work so hard year-round to organize MNfashion’s events. While the restructuring takes place, MNfashion will not be producing any events, including Voltage, Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week and the Emerging Designer showcase, among other industry events. It is now up to independent designers to put together MSPFW, a challenge they may not be willing to take on. </div>

Delray Beach hosts fashion week - Sun-Sentinel

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>Downtown <a href="http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/delraybeach?track=tax-delraybeach">Delray Beach</a> already is a destination for foodies and beachgoers. Now, the city has set its sights on fashionistas. It started last year with a one-night fashion event, aimed at showcasing almost 100 boutiques and shops scattered throughout the city. This year, that one night has morphed into a week of runway shows and other expos that will focus on local style and boosting Delray's shopping scene. "People don't realize what we have in these stores," said Laura Simon, associate director of Delray's Downtown Development Authority, the group coordinating the week's events. "It's not Nordstrom. But, you can still spend $300 on a pair of shoes or get a pair of jeans for $60. We have the best of both worlds." The DDA created the 'Fabulous Fashion Show' along Atlantic Avenue, complete with a catwalk, fist-pumping music and long-legged models. Starting Saturday, there will be more of the same, with the week of free events dedicated to must-have handbags, all-the-rage shoes and ready-to-wear outfits. "This will show the variety that our shops have in <a href="http://www.sun-sentinel.com/community/news/delraybeach?track=tax-delraybeach">Delray Beach</a>," Simon said. "It's even better than last year." Events like fashion week are important to residents, businesses and the city alike because they bring in people, who bring with them revenue. The DDA was created in 1971 to do just that, make downtown Delray a place where people want to open their wallets. Now, the spotlight is on fashionistas from all over South Florida and anywhere else, for that matter, Simon said. From trunk shows, where people can buy pieces right from the designers, to the finale runway show, where spring collections will be showcased by models strutting down an outdoor catwalk in front of the Colony Hotel, the goal is to pack the week with style for sale. Opening night kicks off at Worthing Park with 20 models in 2014 bathing suits handing out the week's schedule and a map identifying each featured store's location. "It is freezing everywhere else," Simon said. "Why not have bikini models running around?" But, fashion week isn't only about women. "People think we don't have men's clothes here," Simon said. Delray does. And there will be a show just for men to prove it. "People are going to be stunned at what we have," said Jackie Beard Robinson, owner of Ginjer, a downtown boutique participating in the men's show. "We have totally stepped up our menswear." For her, fashion week is about showing shoppers that Atlantic Avenue stores are affordable. "It's not like Worth Avenue where you can't even afford a T-shirt," she said. "People think, 'Oh it's on the Avenue, they are going to kill us with the prices.' We aren't. The prices are completely fair." And retail shops aren't the only downtown venues involved. Restaurants and beauty salons are in on the action, too, hosting open houses for designers to promote their goods. "That's the difference between a Miami show and a Delray show," Simon said. "It's a true community effort." From the models on the runway to the downtown stylists who perfected their up-dos, the week is put on by volunteers. "Everyone is working together," Simon said. "And, it's great to see." Delray resident Diane Franco, 71, attended last year's show and said she is ecstatic she was asked to be involved this year. She is modeling in one of the side shows at Atlantic Plaza and looking forward to wearing high heels, a cute outfit and getting her hair done. "They are trying to feature something for everyone," Franco said. "Not everyone is 25 and a size two. I am standing up for the older, over 70, petite women. Vietnamese fashion veteran Minh Hanh once again did not disappoint the onlookers with raw silk and flowing chiffon made printed creations, infused with sharp cuts in contrasting hues of black and white, while Hanoi designer Quang Huy presented an exquisite silk pleat-adorned line, inspired from the nearly extinct tropical forests, at the event. Young designers Tang Thanh Cong, Quang Nhat and Ha Duy, the three finalists from the country’s reality television series Vietnam Fashion Star contest, featured their Japan-inspired ready-to-wear collections on the third day of the event. Quang Nhat chose to present graphic-influenced elegant luxurious orange, coral red and white coloured pieces with geometric motifs whereas Designer Ha Duy opted for daring no-cut, subtle minimalistic looks. With its fresh ready-to-wear collection displays by the new and seasoned fashion talents on the first three days of the event, the soiree ended with an exclusive haute couture night featuring high-end designs from some 16 designers for the first time in its history. </div>

The CFDA announced it'll be helping to create the New York Fashion Week schedule; NYFW owner IMG said it would make the <a href="http://www.refinery29.com/2013/12/58621/fashion-week-banning-bloggers">events more exclusive</a>; and shortly thereafter, <a href="http://www.refinery29.com/2013/12/59403/img-aquisition-fashion-week-plans">IMG was acquired</a> by William Morris Endeavor and Silver Lake Partners. So, in light of these changes, we can't help but wonder what this could mean for the future of fashion lovers starting from the bottom and breaking their way into the business, one blog post at a time. “Blogging is not dying, but it’s definitely changing,” says <a href="http://galadarling.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Gala Darling</a>, co-founder of The Blogcademy, a workshop that teaches bloggers how to make money online. And, Jennine Jacob, blogger and founder of Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB), the leading community network for fashion bloggers, agrees: “I don’t think blogging is ‘dead.’ It’s more popular now than ever.” But, today, the term "blogging" means something entirely different than it did a few years ago. Especially, when taking the lure of fame, fortune, and freebies into consideration. “Blogging used to be about being honest, sharing what was on your mind, and offering something different than the magazines,” Darling adds. Yet, with IMG's announcement recently about limiting access to NYFW events, Catherine Bennett, senior vice president and manager director, told The Wall Street Journal that Fashion Week was simply “becoming a zoo,” a pointed response to fashion insiders’ groans over the growing presence of bloggers at the shows. A new struggle, sure, but that’s not to say blogs aren't lucrative businesses. In fact, when the fashion-blogger scene exploded, labels started seeing major opportunities for cross-promotion. “[From 2010 to 2012], it was pretty much a free-for-all with brands learning how to work with popular bloggers,” says Jacob. However, with companies now equipped with social media experts, marketing strategists, and new technology to measure their return-on-investment (ROI), they have a better understanding of how they can work together. Still, at the end of the day, Jacob says these partnerships are not fair to the newcomers here: “Bloggers are publishers, not salespeople.” </div> <div readability='77' data-page-number='2' class='pb'> <div class='asset left c1'><img alt="04_RichardChai_01_NinaWestervelt" src="http://static1.refinery29.com/bin/entry/da5/x,80/1145738/04-richardchai-01-ninawestervelt.jpg"/>Photographed by Nina Westervelt/MCV Photo. </div> Now, with the heavily documented ROIs, bloggers are faced with increased pressure to keep traffic, engagement, and sales high. And, in the worse cases, this can result in loss of integrity, “selling out,” or simple burnout — and not just for the blogger, but for their readers, too. “I miss the good old days, when blogs felt like blogs, not billboards,” Darling laments. And, this fatigue of heavily commercialized blogs has been echoed elsewhere in recent months and could very well begin to turn readers away. But, Darling is also quick to add that a blogger has to think outside of brand collaborations. “Any blogger who doesn't have some kind of offering beyond advertorial or banner space is insane.” And, the pioneers of the fashion blog know that and seem to be moving on. And, quickly: Bryanboy is now a judge on America’s Next Top Model, Tavi Gevinson launched Rookie, The Blonde Salad designs shoes, Cupcakes and Cashmere is writing books, and Kenza Zouiten has her own clothing line. Ultimately, the interest for blogging is still there. New sites pop up every day, and attendance for annual blogging conferences like Independent Fashion Bloggers and Lucky magazine’s FABB conference are still impressive. Meanwhile, The Blogcademy workshops, which started last year and are held around the world, sell out within days. And, of course, blogs can still be moneymakers today — as long as you have enough readers. But, with oversaturation in this realm, the challenge becomes much more profound. “The bar for becoming a mega blogger is much higher than it used to be,” Jacob explains. “Anyone can start a blog, but to become popular it’s almost as hard as becoming a successful writer, TV star...” And, if IMG has anything to say about it, the industry may be slowly phasing out opportunities. So, yes, a revival may be needed. But, what can be done to strengthen the blogger business model, and what can these self-starters do to keep their audience? Should we, as the fashion community at large, embrace the changes, go with the flow, and see what happens? Or, should we just accept that this could be the beginning of the end? </div> </div>
