Peter Jackson's follow up to last year's smash hit is proving a winner with the Christmas crowds

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug remains at the top of the US box office, beating Will Ferrell's Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues to clinch a second week at number one.

The all-star epic sees Martin Freeman return as Bilbo Baggins while Benedict Cumberbatch and Orlando Bloom head up the supporting cast. The second film in Jackson's Hobbit series based on Tolkien's classic novels, is proving to be a huge hit with the Christmas crowds in the States.

Taking $31.5 million over the past week, the film now has a total domestic haul in the US of $127.5 million while worldwide the movie has taken a whopping $403.8 million, topping the overseas weekend chart with $96 million from 56 territories.

Jackson's second Hobbit film may be falling behind An Unexpected Journey, which opened this time last year but it's still proving to be a big hit among families in the festive season.

Meanwhile down in the number two spot is Will Ferrell's sequel Anchorman 2 which grossed $26.8 million for the weekend itself, putting its five-day domestic debut at $40 million (the first Anchorman debuted to $28.4 million in 2004).

Overseas the numbers are even better for the comedy, which reunites Ferrell with Paul Rudd, Steve Carell and Christina Applegate, taking $13.4 million in just five markets, that's nearly triple the entire lifetime total for the first movie.
