Oprah Winfrey—surprisingly overlooked this morning by the H.F.P.A. for her supporting turn in The Butler, though she was nominated by S.A.G. yesterday—is on the cover[1] of this week’s Hollywood Reporter for their “Women in Entertainment” issue. The most Tailor Made for Pick-Up Quote in the piece is surely her musing about why she’s never had children.
“If I had kids, my kids would hate me,” she told the magazine. “They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would've probably been them.”
(If this is the kind of stuff she talks about with a Hollywood Reporter journalist, what would she talk about with a therapist?! Related: can you imagine being Oprah’s therapist? Even the most seasoned shrink would no doubt end up just giving in and asking her for guidance by the end of the session.)
Winfrey said having children had never been a dream of hers when she was younger, in opposition to the outlook of B.F.F. Gayle King, who is now the mother of two.
“Gayle was the kind of kid who, in seventh grade home ec class, was writing down her name and the names of her children,” Oprah said. “While she was having those kind of daydreams, I was having daydreams about how I could be Martin Luther King.”
