For the second installment in the "Hobbit" trilogy, director Peter Jackson packed a lot of Middle-earth action into "The Desolation of Smaug[1] ." There was a barrel chase, badass elves, an enormous dragon and even cameo by the director, reprising his role from "The Lord of the Rings" as the carrot-eating townsperson in Bree.

But there was also a major cameo in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" that many audience members missed, and it's one they'll definitely want to know about.

If you can remember back to last year, Stephen Colbert mentioned that he visited the set of "The Hobbit" in an interview with Playboy [2] and rumors of the cameo were later confirmed by the Hollywood Reporter[3] without mentioning whether he would turn up in "The Desolation of Smaug" or "There and Back Again."

Well, it turns out that you probably saw the cameo in the past few weeks and didn't even know it.

A GIF of Colbert's appearance[4] in "The Desolation of Smaug" turned up on Reddit over the weekend, and the cameo is finally online for everyone to enjoy.

The appearance comes during the second half of the film, shortly after Bilbo and the dwarves arrive in Laketown. Bard is under close watch by a network of spies, including one who wears an eye patch, despite not needing one. That's Colbert. He's initially hard to recognize without his glasses, but there's no doubt that this is the leader of the Colbert Nation.
