You can only fight the inevitable for so long.
Since releasing, Eminem’s “The Monster (featuring Rihanna)” seemed like the rightful heir to Lorde’s throne atop the Billboard Hot 100.
And had a YouTube movement not factored into the equation last week, “Monster” would have successfully claimed the number one position last week.
That movement, stemming from a new parody of “Wrecking Ball,” gave the Miley Cyrus song a return ticket to the top of the charts. But with the luster worn off, “Wrecking Ball” slides this week to make way for “The Monster” to hit number one.
Also the number one song at radio and on-demand, “The Monster” improves to second on the Streaming Songs chart and retains its number two rank for digital sales.
By departing the number two position, Eminem’s song makes way for Pitbull’s “Timber (featuring Ke$ha)” to advance to that slot. OneRepublic’s “Counting Stars” follows at third, besting Lorde’s “Royals” (#4) and Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” (#5).
Other top ten finishers: Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” (#6), Imagine Dragons’ “Demons” (#7), A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera’s “Say Something” (#8), Passenger’s “Let Her Go” (#9) and Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home (featuring Majid Jordan)” (#10).
