'Glee' Creator Reveals Original Series Finale With Cory Monteith - RollingStone.com

Glee^[1] creator Ryan Murphy revealed the original finale for the series in a eulogy he delivered for actor Cory Monteith, which Entertainment Weekly^[2] has just now published. Monteith, who died of a drug overdose^[3] in July, figured heavily into the plot. In the touching memorial, in which Murphy explains he was unsure of himself when he made the pilot for Glee and how Monteith put him at ease, he described the actor as "both the beginning and the ending of Glee."

Although Murphy has hinted at the finale before – saying "I always knew how it would end"^[4] in October – he did not reveal the plot until now, other than to say it revolved around Monteith's Finn Hudson character and Lea Michele's Rachel Berry character.

"At the end of season six, Lea's Rachel was going to have become a big Broadway star, the role she was born to play," Murphy said. "Finn was going to have become a teacher, settled down happily in Ohio, at peace with his choice and no longer feeling like a Lima loser. The very last line of dialogue was to be this: Rachel comes back to Ohio, fulfilled and yet not, and walks into Finn's glee club. 'What are you doing here?' he would ask. 'I'm home,' she would reply. Fade out. The end."

Murphy went on explain how Monteith grew personally from the time they met. When the actor auditioned for the show, he had never danced alone. The creator says he had never sung, either. Monteith's audition tape contained him "banging on Tupperware." But during the course of the show, the actor grew to master these arts. Murphy sais that when new cast members joined the show, Monteith would be the first to approach them on set.

"That is what Cory was to me – all heart," Murphy said. "Ultimately his body, through his terribly sad and frustrating addiction, won out over that big, strong, beating heart."
