The Lion King has been named Broadway’s all time highest earner and has become the first Broadway show to pass one billion dollars in 2013.
According to BBC News[1] , The Lion King is in its sixteenth year. Only Chicago, Cats and Phantom of the Opera have run longer on Broadway.
Zee News[2] reported that The Lion King brought in $2.8 million in one week. The show has had $97 million in ticket sales alone, not including any merchandise.
The Lion King debuted on Broadway in 1997 and has been a very popular show ever since. It includes songs from Sir Elton John and Sir Tim Rice.
The Book of Mormon was named Broadway’s second highest earning play, making $90.4 million this year. Wicked also broke a record, earning $3.2 million in nine performances (one week).
The Lion King has also been shown in London and Sydney.
It was a year of record breaking sales on Broadway and the sixteen year old show shows no signs of leaving Broadway any time soon.
