If Joseph Gordon-Levitt[1] wasn't already the man of your dreams, get ready for that to change.
The "Dark Knight Rises"[2] actor is always one of the first named to appear in the rumor mill for any comic book adaptation, and now, here's one rumor that's come true: Deadline reports[3] that Gordon-Levitt will join forces with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment to adapt "Sandman,"[4] based on Neil Gaiman's critically revered fantasy series.
Gordon-Levitt pitched his treatment for "Sandman" late last month, according to Badass Digest's original report[5] , but at the time, it wasn't clear if the actor was looking to star, direct or simply produce — or some combination of the three. That last door is the one Gordon-Levitt is looking to walk through, according to the Deadline report: Not only is he in line to produce and star, but Gordon-Levitt has his eye on "Sandman" as a possible directing vehicle.
In addition to Gordon-Levitt's involvement as producer and star, "Sandman" has another marquee comic book movie name involved: David Goyer, the writer responsible for the "Dark Knight" trilogy and "Man of Steel." He's lined up as a producer alongside Gordon-Levitt.
As for the comic itself, "Sandman" centers on Morpheus, alternately known as the Lord of Dreams, the Dream King, or, at its simplest, Dream. He is, in essence, the personification of dreams, and is one of the seven Endless, a group of all-powerful beings who have existed since the beginning of time. When the story of "Sandman" begins, Morpheus has just escaped from 70 years of imprisonment, leading him to seek vengeance upon his captors — but that's only the beginning of a fantastic journey.
Written by Gaiman and illustrated by a variety of artists including Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg, "Sandman" initially ran from 1989 through 1996. DC Comics has returned to aspects of the "Sandman" series for years, once bringing the fan-favorite character Death to life in a Lex Luthor-centric "Action Comics" run. DC recently brought the proper "Sandman" comics in the form of "Sandman: Overture," with Gaiman writing and J.H. Williams III on art.
With Gordon-Levitt lined up for "Sandman," where does that leave the actor's other rumored comic book projects? He's been connected as a top-contender for Marvel Studios films "Doctor Strange"[6] and "Ant-Man"[7] within the last year, though little has been heard recently of the former film, and the latter project looks to have its eye on "Anchorman" star Paul Rudd. Now that "Sandman" is in the mix, it feels unlikely that Gordon-Levitt will step into Marvel territory; such a move could read as a slight against DC.
In any event, Gordon-Levitt's next comic book movie appearance is already in the books, and it isn't "Sandman." He's slated to star in "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For,"[8] hitting theaters on August 22, 2014.
