The first trailer has been released for Cloverfield director Matt Reeves' forthcoming Planet of the Apes prequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The film, which will be released on May 23 2014, stars Andy Serkis as Caesar, the ape leader the actor played in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes and contentiously did not receive an Oscar nomination for. Serkis will appear alongside Judy Greer, Terry Notary and Karin Konoval as Apes, and Gary Oldman and Jason Clarke who will appear as humans.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes picks up where Rise of the Planet of the Apes left off, with the human population succumbing to a deadly virus race of genetically-enhanced apes who take over San Francisco.

The official synopsis reads: "A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier.

REVIEW: Rise of the Planet of the Apes[2]

"They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.”

Appetites were whet earlier in the week when Twentieth Century Fox posted a teaser video on its Instagram:
