"The Voice"[1] coaches had a tough task ahead of them Tuesday night (November 12). Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton watched helplessly from the sidelines as their team members faced the ax. America voted for their favorites with the top 12[2] becoming the top 10.
This week's twist was a "Voice" first in which fans could instantly save one of the bottom three by casting a vote on Twitter.
Last week's opening act, A Great Big World[3] , stunned audiences with their emotional duet of "Say Something" with Aguilera. Sara Bareilles kept the momentum going opening the nail-biting show with her new song "Brave," accompanied by contestants Caroline Pennell, Jacquie Lee, Tessanne Chin and Kat Robichaud.
"Tuesdays are why I drink so much," Shelton revealed before the first saves were revealed: Team Cee Lo's sweetheart Caroline Pennell and Team Christina's crooner Matthew Schuler. The next saves were also not much of a surprise as Team Blake's Austin Jenckes and Team Adam's Tessanne Chin secured a spot in the top 10, only after Team Cee Lo came together with their coach for a rock-hard performance of "Roam."
At this point the coaches each had one artist moving forward. Team Christina's little "force of nature" Jacquie Lee was next on the safe list, as was Team Blake's very personable Cole Vosbury, but when Team Adam's Will Champlin was announced safe, a mixed-emotion clap was drawn from Levine, who was clearly hoping James Wolpert would return the next week.
Luckily his wish was granted. After Levine performed "A Hard Day's Night" with his strong team, Wolpert and Team Blake's handsome single dad Ray Boudreaux were saved.
"I'm a little pissed, man," Green remarked when asked how he felt about seeing two of his three members, Kat Robichaud and Jonny Gray, in the bottom. Aguilera shared Green's frustration as her soulful singer Josh Logan rounded out the bottom three.
That meant fans had exactly five minutes to jump on Twitter and put in their save request for their favorite artist, with coaches professing their support for army vet Gray.
The seemingly simple concept was terribly delivered, though. Instead of announcing the saved artist and leaving the bottom two with a last moment on stage, host Carson Daly announced Gray's name first and directed him offstage, leaving the audience confused as to what happened. Basically, Gray was eliminated. Daly then announced the fiery Kat Robichaud as the first-ever "Voice Save," and poor Gray and Logan's time came to an un-climactic end as the attention shifted to Robichaud.
