Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston's film enjoys second week at number one in the US

Thor: The Dark World is still hammering the competition at the global box office, spending another week at number one over in the US, with total sales now soaring past takings for it's predecessor.

Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston's big screen adventure has soared past the $479 million mark in ticket sales, with the total meaning the Marvel movie easily beats the entire lifetime gross of the first Thor movie, which hit cinemas in 2011.

Kenneth Branagh's first outing took $449 million in global sales, whilst the sequel also managed to beat the total for Captain America: The First Avenger which managed a global haul of $371 million.

The Dark World enjoyed a second weekend at the top of the US box office charts, taking $150 million in the States alone. The global total even managed to beat predictions of a massive $450 million total.

Malcolm D. Lee's comedy The Best Man Holiday manged to bring in an impressive haul though, as it entered the US box office chart at number two.

The sequel to the 1999 hit surpassed analysts expectations with total sales reaching $30.6 million.

With little else out there in terms of competition, Thor has enjoyed it's run at the top of the charts but with The Hunger Games Catching Fire released this week, it's predicted to start slipping in sales from this weekend.

Thor's recent dominance was also thanks to it's only big contender, Martin Scorsese's Wolf of Wall Street, being pushed back to a Christmas Day slot.
