Indeed, on The Mentalist Season 6 Episode 8[1] , the identity of Red John was revealed. We now know who murdered Patrick Jane's family oh so many years ago.

The Mentalist Reveals Red John!
It was Sheriff Thomas McAllister. He did not really die in the Malibu explosion, as some fans had predicted.
During the hour, Jane learned just how closely Lisbon, Cho, Rigsby and Van Pelt had his back, as all put their career on the line in order to help their colleague finally conclude his quest for Red John.
But when the time came to snuff this murderer out, that was all Patrick Jane.
And he did so with his bare hands, staring into Red John's face as his enemy took his final breath. It was brutal, appropriate stuff.
And it marked the end of a very entertaining journey for fans of this CBS drama.
