1. Smart satire. Outside of The Onion, smart satire is hard to come by. But Spank! has been garnering rave reviews, and not just from stagette parties (although they have some things to say, too). "Even if you know the rapid-fire gag format from Airplane!-style movies, Spank! is a focused spoof ... sticking to the plot of E.L. James' Fifty Shades of Grey even as it decimates it," according to Mike Weatherford of the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He also says that Spank! works "on several levels, from raunchy site gags ... to smart satire of the thin line that separates a best-seller from Internet fan fiction."

2. Mr. Big, meet Mr. Dangerous. Expert satire or not, Spank! is going after a very specific demographic - those of us who miss cosmopolitan night with Carrie Bradshaw and the gang. The official Spank! website is explicit in its instructions: "Get there early for pre-show cocktails ... grab your girlfriends and don't miss the most exciting show of the year!"

3.Danielle Trzcinski. No doubt most of the (female) eyes will be on Patrick Whalen as the Christian Grey-like lead. But the lady with the consonant-filled last name is getting raves as naive 22-year-old Tasha Woode. And director/head writer Jim Millan has a paragraph full of credits that includes re-working Spider-Man: Turn Of the Dark on Broadway and directing tours with Kids In the Hall.

4. This isn't Tony and Tina's Wedding.

The jokes are ribald and sometimes filthy - just as one would hope from a parody of a bestselling trilogy about S&M.

5. Where the girls are. By pure, happy coincidence, Spank! is on the exact same weekend as Alberta Ballet's Sarah McLachlan ballet Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Sometimes this stuff just writes itself.

Spank! The Fifty Shades Parody Nov. 14-16 The Vogue Theatre Tickets: $32.50 to $47.50 at northerntickets.com All eyes will be on Patrick Whalen as he portrays a Christian Grey-like lead.
