It appears there is no rest for the wicked when it comes to the team behind Doctor Who. Just days after the special episode to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the show aired, details of the Christmas episode of the hit BBC sci-fi show have been revealed.
With the Christmas episode being the last one that Matt Smith will feature in as the iconic Time Lord, it is only right that he takes centre stage in the first promo image that has been released. Looking determined, Matt can be seen holding onto the head of a robot whilst his companion Clara - played by Jenna Louise Coleman - looks on at him from behind.
However, the picture isn't the only piece of information that we have been given as the official title of the festive special has been announced as The Time Of The Doctor.

And it appears it's going to be a busy Christmas for the Doctor as the synopsis - according to Digital Spy - reads:
"Orbiting a quiet backwater planet, the massed forces of the universe's deadliest species gather, drawn to a mysterious message that echoes out to the stars. And amongst them – the Doctor.
"Rescuing Clara from a family Christmas dinner, the Time Lord and his best friend must learn what this enigmatic signal means for his own fate and that of the universe."
As fans prepare to say goodbye to Matt, the actor admitted that he could have continued to play the Doctor but felt that it was the right time to go when he confirmed his departure earlier this year.
According to the Los Angeles Times, he said: "I’d have very happily done another year. It’s a wonderful show", he added before insisting that it was the best time for him to leave.
"But I think you gotta go when you gotta go, and for me, it just felt like the right time to move on."
The actor also revealed that it wasn't an easy decision to make to leave the show. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Matt - who will be seen passing his sonic screwdriver on to new Doctor Peter Capaldi - said:
"It's a very intense process to play the Doctor. The line-learning is really hard, and you have to live away from home for nine or ten months a year. I love the show, and it wasn't an easy choice to come to, but it's the right time for both of us".
