NEWTON — Though the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade has come and gone, Sussex County residents will get another chance to enjoy floats, marching bands and a parade of nearly 1,000 marchers on Saturday.
The Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce’s annual Holiday Parade will step off at 10 a.m. from Lower Spring Street, march along Spring Street to Moran Street, and end at Memory Park.
And the expected partly sunny skies should make for a great day for those who love a parade, although it will also be a cold day, with highs in the mid-30s, said John Dlugoenski, senior meteorlogist with AccuWeather.
Bundled-up parade goers can pick a spot along Spring Street to watch the parade, which will end with the arrival of a Newton hook and ladder fire truck with Santa on board.
After the parade, Santa will be available in front of the Fire Museum on Spring Street to visit with the children and get their holiday wish list.
Also following the parade, both the Newton High School and Kittatinny High School bands will reconvene on Spring Street and present a short concert.
Participants and parade watchers are urged to reach the parade route by 9:30 a.m. to avoid being inconvenienced by the detour around the parade. Parking in all municipal parking lots will be free.
The Newton Winter Farmer’s Market will open at 9:30 a.m. and will be open after the parade as well, so parade goers can browse through and pick up some fresh produce. Other merchants on Spring Street will be open as well before and after the parade to kick off the holiday season.
Spring Street will be closed to traffic from 9:30 a.m. until about noon.
Traffic will be restricted from streets surrounding the business district during the parade and motorists should expect delays.
Parking will be prohibited on Spring and Moran Streets after 6 a.m. Saturday until the parade has finished.
