Bruce Springsteen on Monday released "High Hopes," a single from an album by the same name that will go on sale Jan. 14.

The album is a collection of fresh takes on old songs, covers and previously unreleased material. A video of the single, a new version of a Tim Scott composition that Mr. Springsteen first covered on his '96 EP "Blood Brothers," can be seen at brucespringsteen.net[1] .

The "High Hopes" single, as well as tracks "American Skin (41 Shots)" and "The Ghost of Tom Joad, " were recorded in Australia with Tom Morello, the Rage Against the Machine guitarist and an occasional E Street Band guest. Mr. Morello filled in for band member Steven Van Zandt on some recent tour dates while Mr. Van Zandt was filming the second season of "Lilyhammer," the crime drama set in Norway in which he stars.

A version of "American Skin" appears on "Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band: Live in New York City," issued in 2001. The original "The Ghost of Tom Joad" is the title track of Mr. Springsteen's 1995 solo album.

"High Hopes" also includes covers of the Saints' "Just Like Fire Would" and Suicide's "Dream Baby Dream."

In the album's liner notes, Mr. Springsteen writes: "Some of these songs, 'American Skin' and 'Ghost of Tom Joad,' you'll be familiar with from our live versions. I felt they were among the best of my writing and deserved a proper studio recording."

Mr. Springsteen's previous album of new material, "Wrecking Ball," was released in March 2012.
