Fall is a season full of change, and since the temperatures have been dropping, shorts and tank tops are scarcely seen around Western Michigan University’s campus.

Instead, women have put away their high-top shorts and gladiator scandals and have switched them for patterned leggings, paired with boots and big, knit sweaters. Men have ditched their colorful shorts and tank tops in favor of jeans and hoodies. Also with this change in weather, most people wear a scarf instead of sunglasses.

Fashion magazines like Marie Claire and television shows like E! News can give sound fashion advice, but it may not always be applicable to campus. Some people choose not to adhere to the changing styles, but the fashion department at WMU is always up to date on the latest trends.

According to Courtney Matlock and Jacob Whitman, two textile and apparel studies majors, this fall will be known for its mixing and matching of decades, nations and genders.

“European mixed with American 90s grunge,” Whitman said, talking about styles for this fall. Matlock gave an example of chunky boots, stating that they mix masculine and feminine looks.

“Seventies inspired is totally in this fall,” Matlock said, adding that jewel tones come from the 70s and will be very popular.

“Tones like cobalt blue, emerald green, amethyst, and amber, mainly,” Whitman said. In the case of fabrics, he said European influenced chiffon and weave will be popular, instead of knits.

More textile and apparel studies majors from WMU weighed in with five articles of clothing, accessories or styles necessary for this fall.

“Number one is combat boots for sure,” said Kenya Winter, a senior from Brooklyn, Mich. “They’re just versatile. Any kind of combat boots are good.”

Winter also listed leather bomber jackets for clothing, as well as beanies and dark nail polish for accessories. Her last item was scarves.

“Scarves are good, the triangle ones,” Winter said. “I just like how they look better.”

Cassi Cooper, a freshman from Delton, Mich., said one necessary item is short boots because of their versatility and ability to dress up an outfit. Dark lipstick and a comfy knit sweater were on her list, as well as socks.

“Peek-a-boo socks,” Cooper said, referring to knee-length socks. “[They] can make a boring outfit more exciting because [they are] a subtle detail that everyone notices.”

For her fifth article of clothing, Cooper said long cardigans are a must.

“Cardigans longer than your butt. They’re more comfortable, for one. They’re more practical because they do cover more. You can dress them up and wear them casually.”

Michelle Wellman, a sophomore from Okemos, Mich., had cardigans and dark lipstick on her list as well, along with beanies.

“[Beanies] make your head warm, but they’re cute,” Wellman said. She added knee-high riding boots, because of their look and ability to pull an outfit together. “I put on my boots and I feel fancier.”

Wellman’s last item was also scarves.

“You could put a scarf, a baggy cardigan, leggings and riding boots on and you look like you’re ready to go,” Wellman said.
