International dressing trends seen on runways in New York, London, Milan and Paris might seem a tad extreme when brought into the Palm Beach context.

That’s why Beth Pine, manager of Neiman Marcus, 151 Worth Ave., periodically hosts seasonal in-store luncheon shows that present the looks of the moment, offering advice on how to make them work for an individual who might not be comfortable sporting studded black-leather garb from head to toe on their island forays.

It may be Halloween week, but most women in town aren’t quite ready to get into biker-rocker costumes on a daily basis — say, on a random Tuesday in November.

So at the most recent “Beth’s Picks” luncheon show, Pine advised getting a leather motorcycle-style jacket but wearing it with something a little softer or sparkly.

She also suggested selecting a tough-chic spiked handbag or a pair of “heavily metalled” shoes as a means of acknowledging the current trends, without succumbing to the full Hells Angels mode. You might say that she advises fashion-minded Palm Beachers to embrace a hybrid “rebel with a Range Rover” look.

If all of that is too much — as it might be for those wanting to avoid looking like mutton dressed as lamb — there are other routes to maintaining a with-it wardrobe through the winter. Most notable is the option of keeping it neutral with creamy white and beige pieces and mixing them with black and, for fall especially, a touch of red.

And for the guys, it’s pretty much the same story (minus the red). Pine urges men, too, to add a black leather jacket to their sartorial repertoire this season.
